Dastrux City Gazetteer 5: City Directory

Adventuring

  • The chief purpose of the Golden Talon guildhall is to connect adventurers to patrons and clients. Anderson Avenue, Mentullius.
  • Othu’s Gymnasium is often visited by patrons who use the relaxed atmosphere to recruit the athletic. Travelers’ Row, Fowlerville.
  • The Roadwardens are always accepting new recruits and often contract independent adventurers. Fountain Street, Fowlerville.

Armorers

  • Dinmur and Sons, a dwarven forge that produces weapons and armor. Dwarftown, Riverside.
  • The Sword and Shield, an import shop for weapons and armor.
  • Loingirder, an armor shop. Armorer Lane, Fowlerville.
  • Dean’s Defenses, a weapon shop. Armorer Lane, Fowlerville.

Banking

  • The Golden Talon guildhall offers limited banking services to members, including money orders and vaults for valuable items. Anderson Avenue, Mentullius.
  • Declan Bank provides a more robust set of services, including loans and deposit accounts. However, their services are out of range of most people, as a minimum deposit of $5,000 is necessary to open an account. Bankhouse Plaza, Oldmarket.
  • Lugglin and Sons is a typical example of a goldsmith who acts as a small bank. Customers leave gold bars with them, and they gives in return a promissory note for 95% of the gold’s value. The smiths use the gold for their business, and repay the deposit with bars or merchandise. Goldsmith Court, Oldmarket.

Eateries

  • The Golden Gazelle, a mid-scale tavern frequented by artists and middle-class merchants. It stands right on the square, its portico woven with buntings in the colors of its noble patron du jour. Portrait Square, Colossea.
  • The Honest Dog, a mid-scale tavern half cut into the hillside. Jolly burghers enjoy local beers from the Garth and smoke imported tobacco. Greenhill Road, Knightswall.

Entertainments

  • The Galliano, the greatest of all the theaters. It is hosted in a magnificent temple to Achelaus and Melatus, twin gods of comedy and tragedy. Theater Way, Colossea.
  • The Great Arena, an oval building used for competitions of all kinds. Outright deathmatches have been illegal for hundreds of years, but the grand melee’s cudgels cause a few fatalities each year. The arena floor is also used for jousts, races, archery competitions, gymnastics, and as a fairground for several weeks a year. Arena Circuit, Colossea.

General stores

  • All and Sundries, a large store selling a wide variety of goods but especially traveling gear. Travelers’ Row, Fowlerville.
  • Baldwin’s Imports, a small storefront with high-quality goods. General Antonio Street, Oldmarket.
  • Gage’s Shop, a secondhand store. South Dockside Street, Claytown.
  • Weather Eye, a mid-scale store and pawnshop catering to sailors. It sells general goods, sailing gear, and occasionally curiosities that have been pawned. North Dockside Street, Lakeside.

Healers

  • The College of Physick at the University. Visitors can volunteer to be healed by students. The treatment is free, but not always reliable. University Place, Mentullius.
  • Serpent Hospital stands on a pier, an annex of the temple of Topilcoatl, a deity that guards the body from corruption. Broad Street, Mentullius.

Libraries

  • The City Archive is not a library in name, but offers access to technical and historical documents. Viewing a public document costs either $2 or $5, depending on its size (poster-sized maps and plans are more expensive.) The City Archive also holds secure documents that are not available to the public. Courthouse Square, Oldmarket.
  • The Municipal Library. Its collection is divided into two sections. The General Collection holds reference books and broad overviews written for a general (if literate) audience. The Legacy Collection is composed of private libraries that have been willed or given to the city. The latter has many more specific and detailed treatises, but because it has been compiled by chance, the breadth of coverage on any one topic can be haphazard. Access to the Legacy Collection costs $10 per hour for archival expenses. General Ingolf Street, Oldmarket.
  • The philanthropist Navid Kolb’s private book collection. It is open to the public by appointment. There is no fee, but there is a minimum standard of hygiene. Ulrike Gardens, Knightswall.
  • University Library holds the greatest single collection of texts in the Empire. Access is free of charge, but popular books have time limits before they must be ceded to the next patron. Access to books the University deems dangerous is locked behind written exams; sitting each exam costs $20, but proves the sitter’s competency in the topic. University Place, Mentullius.

Lodgings

  • Widow Strickerin’s downscale rooms for let. Drafty, cramped apartments. When the building was partitioned, several spaces were left inaccessible; cohorts of university students have pried up boards to create passages into these secret rooms. Directly across the street from the Hand and Foot, a downscale student pub. University Place, Mentullius.
  • The Pink Unicorn, a downscale inn and tavern where starving artists and sexual nonconformists gather for a perpetual Feast of Fools. Each night a new King of Misrule is elected and social norms are inverted. It has two floors of downscale rooms, blackened with the soot of candles that burn all through the night. Little Theater Way, Colossea.
  • Micipsa’s House, a mid-scale restaurant serving spiced roasts and stews. Not the finest, but certainly the city’s most popular restaurant. It hosts a midscale travelers’ hostelry on its upper floors. A pair of observation spires rise from the roof and offer a romantic view of the city at night. Goldsmith Court, Oldmarket.
  • Thistle House, a mid-scale townhouse that can be rented by small groups. Its former bedroom suites have been subdivided into lodgings for 5 to 10 people, and it boasts a kitchen, dining room, drawing room, and small library. A old smuggler’s tunnel, no longer secret, runs directly to the mezzanine of the Honest Dog tavern. Greenhill Road, Knightswall.
  • The upscale Lynx Hotel, which occupies a narrow but tall frontage. Its slot windows look over the water gardens, and channels of water cascade down its front into babbling pools. The Hotel is furnished in an eclectic fashion, as it is operated by a consortium of artisan guilds; every item in the Hotel is for sale, and replaced piecemeal as guests take them when they check out. Hydra Boulevard, Oldmarket.
  • The Hôtel Capital, an upscale hotel offering suites of rooms. Its rooftop garden looks over the whole city, and its greenery holds several favored spots for rendezvous of a romantic or espionage character. The hotel’s marble edifice stands behind a line of lilac bushes. The ground floor holds ballrooms and grand halls, one of which hosts a fine banquet each night for hotel guests. Ulrike Gardens, Knightswall.

Sages

  • The staff at the Botanical Gardens, a glass pavilion filled with rooms for various collections of exotic plants. The Gardens are leased to the University but stand on crown property, and are the only place in Mentullius that the Palatine Guard can be found. Anderson Avenue, Mentullius.
  • The keepers of the Imperial Zoological Garden, where animals from distant lands can be viewed in spacious but somewhat tawdry enclosures. Folderich Avenue, Colossea.

Ships

  • Klopstock Shipping is a local establishment. They offer shallow-drafted passenger and cargo service upriver and along a significant portion of the lakeshore, but their ships are quite small. Fountain Street, Fowlerville.
  • Emerald Falcon Company is a new concern operating from Beaconside. They offer fast, comfortable passenger service some way upriver and around the whole lake, but their ketch sailboats have little room for cargo. Waterfront Way, Lakeside.
  • Kodirynth and Clutch is a 3rd-generation saurian family business. They own a fleet of cogs and hulks that do heavy cargo trade around the lake and down to the sea. North Dockside Street, Lakeside.
